Biden stumps for Nelson, dubs Scott “handmaiden” of Trump
Orlando, Fla. – Former Vice President Joe Biden attacked Republican Senate candidate Rick Scott as a “handmaiden” for President Donald Trump on Tuesday, but avoided mentioning the president by name.
“You have a governor of this state who will be the handmaiden of the president of the United States,” Biden said of Scott, to cheers from a large crowd gathered in downtown Orlando.
The former vice president was in Central Florida wrapping up a two-day swing through the state in support of his friend Sen. Bill Nelson’s re-election. The visit included stops in Tampa, Jacksonville and Tallahassee.
Biden also bashed Republicans for recently saying they are considering cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
“These are things you paid for,” Biden declared. “If Bill does not win and we don’t take back the House and Senate they will take it away.”
Biden also had high praise for Nelson, saying, “I’ve served with a lot of people. But I haven’t served with anyone with more character, more courage, more integrity and decency than Bill Nelson.”
Nelson, a fifth-generation Floridian, has served in the military, flown in space and now is in the U.S. Senate.
Nelson is in a close battle for re-election with Scott who is spending tens of millions of dollars of his own personal fortune in what critics says is a blatant attempt by Scott to buy a public office with ill-begotten gains.
